To track events other than downloads, outbound links, video, and regular clickstream data, you may need to create custom events. Keep reading »

Out of the box, Lytiks tracks all your regular clickstream data including path through site and automatic tracking of downloads and outbound links, but if you need to track other kinds of clicks, you can readily do so by adding the piece of code to your html object:

class=”notrack” onclick=”cat.TrackEvent(‘page/event-button‘)”

The only thing you have to modify is the part in the parentheses. You can call this anything you want, but we recommend naming it after the name of the page and the object separated by a forward slash (as shown above).

If you want to track clicks on an anchor tag it might look like this:

<a href=”" class=”notrack” onclick=”cat.TrackEvent(‘page/event-button’)”>Event</a>

The class=”notrack” attribute is not necessary unless you are tracking an anchor tag and can be omitted in the unlikely case that you are trying to track another type of object.

Once you have added this code to the object you want to track clicks of, you will see those events show up as events in your data and you’ll be able to create goals and sort your data based on successful completion of the event. Please let us know if you have any questions or need help with tracking custom events.

Go to your account’s website profiles list by clicking the “Analytics Settings” link on the top left of the page under the big Google Analytics logo.

A best practice is to create a separate profile for each filter you create, as well as leaving one master backup account with no filters. Creating a profile filter will permanently alter or restrict the data coming into that profile, and will alter the data starting from the day it was applied.

To create a new profile, click the “Add Profile” link to the right of the page for the site you wish to create the profile under.

You may either add a new profile or add a profile to an existing domain. To add a profile to an existing domain, choose the domain to which you want to add the profile from the drop-down menu.

Next, enter the profile name and check whether you want the Google AdWords data sourced from the linked profile from the existing domain (if applicable). A best practice is to name the profile as a description of the filter you are about to apply to it. Click the “Finish” button to create the profile.

Now it’s time to add the filter to the profile you just created. Go back to the “Analytics Settings” page and click the “Edit” link next to the profile you have just created.

Click the “Add Filter” link under the “Filters Applied to Profile” heading. This is roughly two-thirds down the page on the right.

Exclusion is a predefined filter in Google Analytics, so it’s easy to filter out an individual IP address or range of addresses. In the “Create New Filter” page you have just reached, enter the name of the location you are excluding so you can easily see what data you are excluding from the filter when you access this profile.

Choose the “Predefined filter” button and select “Exclude” from the leftmost drop-down menu. Select “traffic from the IP addresses” from the middle drop-down. You will then have the choice to exclude an exact IP address or a range that begins with, ends with, or contains a certain combination.

Click the “Save Changes” button to finish creating the filter.

Remember to allow 24 hours for Google Analytics to start receiving data through your newly-created filter (it is not real-time). You may want to create a custom alert to remind yourself the next day to check that the information is being received properly.
